Interested in seeing what Yamaha has up their sleeve with this widely-anticipated new bike model launch. Three cylinder supersport...sounds interesting. If it comes with cruise control and heated grips I could be tempted. The new parallel twin sport bikes don't have a lot of appeal, but a 3 cylinder...??? |

they already have https://www.motorcyclenews.com/bike-revi...xsr900-gp/2024/ which is rather nice it has cruise control but heated grips not mentioned, but would be an easy accessory to port over from the Tracer I had an early 2015 MT09 Tracer (FJ09). The CP3 motor is a peach. Shame the rest of the bike was a bit rudimentary but newer versions use premium suspension and electronics now.

There are a number of videos now, talking about the R9. I also just found out that Triumph is unveiling an 800cc model on October 22nd. With literbikes facing emission standard hurdles, the R1 from Yamaha is now track-only. With MotoGP going to 850cc bikes in 2027(?), it begs the question: Will manufacturers drop the 1,000cc engine entirely and produce bikes to rival the R9 and whatever Triumph has cooked up? If BMW came out with a 750-850cc version of the RR, priced fairly, I'd think it would sell very well. |

I doubt BMW will create a new engine in the 850cc class. Certainly not an I4 engine to compete with the triples in performance and cost. The R9 and new Triumph are just developments of existing lines with tiny market segments. Very little R&D needed.

Well, it's too bad. BMW's RR bikes are becoming hideously expensive and have gratuitous features like wings, which make little sense on a streetbike. With other manufacturers like Yamaha building supersport triples that are affordable, there just might be an argument for BMW to feel the need to compete in that segment. Emission regulations are forcing literbike makers to bend their bikes into pretzels to meet the demands of emission curtailment, and you read constantly how the new BMW RR's have "flat spots" in their power curves due to the tight regulations; owner's bitch about that a lot. Yamaha now only sells the R1 for track use. One wonders how much longer Suzuki's GSX-R bikes will exist in their current configuration. |

One issue that I have with the latest motorcycle models is that their fuel tanks keep getting smaller. The new 2025 Triumph 900 twin only has a 3.2 gallon fuel tank. Taking out the usual 1 gallon reserve, doesn't leave you riding very far before you get the low fuel warning signal.

They were all built as budget spec bikes. Through gradual improvements and the addition of better quality components you can buy a Tracer 900 that is near the same spec as an R1250RS with electronic suspension. The MT range was a bit of a punt by Yamaha but they disrupted the market. Yamaha sold shed loads of the early bikes and have used some of the profits to develop niched models further. These bikes do not sell in huge numbers but attract a lot of attention especially when given a few yellow speed blocks. How many XSR900 have you seen on the road? It is very easy for Yamaha to hang a bunch of posh components from the parts bin to make a new version with tweaks here and there to eek out more power or torque. BMW have been doing the same with the F series. Started off with some very basic bikes with the Funduro single using Rotax engines, now using Loncin twin engines. I just don't think BMW has the time to make another line of petrol bikes. Go through all of the R&D to make a new range of bikes for a tiny sector of the market. They just won't see a return on the investment.

I'm not sure about BMW not making more petrol bikes. They (in my opinion) threw some stupid money at the R18 project, which for the life of me makes no sense as a motorcycle. Then there are all the iterations of the GS model (small, medium and large). The RR, which costs close to $25,000 now, is no one's idea of an entry-level bike, has become uncomfortable, has flat spots in the power curve and sports enough technology to help launch one of Musk's SpaceX rockets (that might be an exaggeration, but I'm in a "mood' this morning...lol!) |
