OT: The Olympics...a "triumph"...or a travesty?

My wife is a former Olympic-level runner (track) and we've both been athletic most of our lives. For years we enjoyed watching the Olympics, in particular the track and field events. But we've also been known to watch boxing as well, especially back "in the day" (1970's/1980's). But now we can't stomach the depths to which the Olympics have sunk, from the "Opening Ceremony" this year involving a poorly-advised "Last Supper" tableau, to the boxing match described below, involving a "biological male" fighting in the female class and essentially destroying "his" opponent. Add to this the fact that the word "amateur" can no longer be applied to the "Games" and you have what is (in my opinion) "tv not worth watching". |

Honestly, I saw the downfall of the Olympics back in the 1996 Summer Games in Atlanta, GA. In the opening ceremony, where normally they release a flock of doves, an outcry from animal rights groups pressured the Olympic Committee to change it out with children running around the main track with "dove kites." I knew then that special interest groups were going to corrupt the games and increasingly politicize them.

Didn't see all of the opening ceremony, thought it was ambitious and a good idea in principle but a shame there was torrential rain it would have been much better in a stadium in those conditions. The choice of Lady Gaga to sing in a cod French accent was weird, there are plenty of good French singers that could have done that and make it more authentic. |

the Olympics has always been a but fucked up and certainly political. Berlin 1936, Munich 1976, Moscow 1980 anyone?

Agree with speculation about readers of the Mail. I've been spending a few hours a day watching specific competitions and never knew there was some transgender controversy....

There will always be controversy where the Olympics are concerned. All one need do is look back to the days when the "Iron Curtain" countries were suspected of doping their athletes to enhance performance. You expect the USSR (and later China) to cheat any way they can to win. My observation is that as political rivalries have diminished, cultural ones have replaced them. One can spin all day long on how the opening ceremonies weren’t an attack on a particular faith, BUT we have a well established history of “political correctness” at the Olympics. If anything is considered remotely offense, it is either reworked, dropped, or at least they would announce the event so it wouldn’t be misinterpreted. That it wasn’t isn’t something I will attribute to laziness or incompetence as compared to malice. We’re too far down the road of politically correct thinking to accept it was just an oversight. And…as we well know…had they done something deemed offensive to other groups, Paris would burn. I find it amazing how the most “tolerant” of groups gets rebranded as utterly “intolerant.”
