I've finally come around to setting up a trip for the first half of 2024 (hoping to do Germany proper post-UEFA Euro 2024. (maybe September))
The trip we've settled on at this point is all local roads up to Steyr (Austria), follow the Austrian romantic road to Salzburg and proceed down to Berchtesgarden. Spend 2 nights there, one day to go visit the Eagle's nest, Konigsee and Salzburg and then follow the German Alpine road from Berchtesgraden to Fussen. Visit Neuschwanstein and drive south to Zell am See area to spend the night. Then ride down Grossglockner alpine pass, ride the Nockalm alpine road, visit the Kolnbrein dam and then either spend the night near Villach or take the highway back to home as it's 3 hour ride. Should take 5-6 days
Any tips and experience to share on Austria? Is May (generally) still too cold for Alpine passes, weather to unpredictable, extra things worth visiting on the way or to avoid?
Year-round riding enthusiast i.e. seasonal motorcycle popsicle.
I will be in Kempten for 3 nights in June, 3-5, then 2 nights in Bregenz for 6-7. I wanted to do the whole of the Alpenstrasse but I could not find sensibly priced accommodation to fit my small group at the eastern end, so we will do a loop towards Oberammergau via Plansee from Kempten.
I believe the Grossglockner opens early May most years and the Bavarian Alps are lower altitude. Even in July you can have 35C at Zell am See and -4C at 2500m. I will be taking layers and waterproofs.
