Half way through a 7 hour day ride to Clee Hill yesterday I stopped for lunch and the topbox would not open. Inside was phone, wallet, door keys and lunch. My travelling companion funded my lunch and fuel. The top box is from my 1200RS which was re-keyed for the R1250RS. This morning I was able to open it after numerous attempts both yesterday and today. A lot of info about pannier issue when re-keying but can find nothing about topboxes. Anyone had this issue and found a solution? |

I bought my top box in December, installed the lock cylinder per the instructions and it's worked like a champ since. I did have one occasion after washing the bike where I couldn't open the side cases, even though they were unlocked. Turned out water froze in the mechanism and I was able to open it after the temperature warmed up later in the day. Do you have anything like that going on? |

How long since the rekey? How many times have you been able to open/close before this happened. I can only imagine how frustrating that would have been. |

I think I have found the problem. Since my BMW dealer could not help I removed the coverplate over the mechanism by removing 4 screws. Seeing no obvious problem I replaced the coverplate but did not close the lid. The mechanism jammed but by backing off the two central screws it released. I again removed the coverplate and there is insufficient clearance between the sliding part that engages with the lid and the coverplate. I would not expect to see a lot of wear on the sliding part but if there was surely it would increase the clearance so I do not understand why this has happened. Since the panniers were re-keyed I have used the topbox only a few times as it has not been possible to do overnight trips. Prior to re-keying the topbox was used for 37000miles on the R1200RS without any sign of a problem. |
