General topics » Easy Fix If Your Gas Cap Wont Open

I found a east fix if your keyless gas cap will not open. Probably works on a keyed cap also if the lock fails.
We had a little trouble with Debbie's cap last year on a trip so a few weeks ago I decided to try a billet cap on her bike.
After removing the tank covers and I started to remove the cap I noticed when you remove the small part of the cap held by two fasteners you can open and close the cap.
This piece can be removed without removing the tank covers in seconds.

The piece you remove has the catch for the cap.

Here's the cap I had planned to install.

The keyless cap has a small lip to grip to open and close. Debbie was worried when arthritis gets in her hands it would be
difficult to open and told me to leave the keyless cap on.

Now that little gem of a post is exactly why forums like this are needed! Thank you!

P.S. I take it that the occasional squirt of oil into the mechanism in that section will help keep things running smoothly?

For those with Givi Tanklock rings fitted, you will need to remove this before being able to access the cover mentioned above. 2 extra bolts, is all.

I’ve had this problem a couple of times (with a SW Motech ring fitted). Each time I found that backing off the mounting screws slightly fixed it. Worth putting the appropriate hex key in your tank bag!

I've posted this before:

SW-Motech Evo tank ring on BMW 4,5 nm or 9 in/lb. I am certain everyone overtightens theirs.
