Luggage rack removal, SatNav relocation and some bits of protection

I never liked the looks of the topcase bracket and the bit of scaffolding hanging under the rear of the bike. I do not intend to use a topbox or the BMW panniers so I have removed the pannier holders and replaced the topcase bracket with passenger grab handles.

The rear end looks nicer to me this way. Shame BMW insists on these pannier holders and does not design an integrated luggage holder like Kawasaki (or do they on the F900 or the new S1000XR models?) I will not be carrying a passenger so my tailbag also fits well on the passenger seat.

I relocated the SatNav holder with a Wunderlich base holder. I had a test ride today and must say it was not a great experience. The holder rattles and vibrates a lot. It is unlikely but I am still checking if I have done something wrong when installing. I will be contacting Wunderlich as well.

I also added some bits of protection, which I am not sure if they will be of any use if I drop the bike.

Lastly, I installed a tankpad to prevent further scratches on the lower black part.

I am waiting for the Mudsling and Avantguard from NippyNormans to install on the bike as possibly the last items.

That’s the way to do it! No rack, no panniers rails, (and with a 1250 ditch the Nav mount as well) I’d also forgo the plastic protection bits as well, but some has to keep Wunderlich in business.

Lovely bike, btw, I did 18k on my ‘fury’, before p/x to get ‘Bumble’ (or ‘Bimble’ the way I ride it, I mean 50 degrees, that’s falling off isn’t it?)

You just described a 1250R.

Great looking bike. I’m also putting mine on a diet—Akra slip-on, pannier rails delete, and passenger peg removal but don’t know how to remove the top case base. It doesn’t budge when I removed the 2 large bolts under the pillion seat. Are there more hidden bolts or did I just not pull hard enough? Any experience with removing the charcoal canister? I deleted the one on my R9T and it greatly cleaned up the bike with no faults in the ECM.

Hi, useful feedback on the Wunderlich sat Nav holder. I also have one but on a 1250.

The screen on the 1250 is higher and on my installation the bottom of the sat Nav blocks the view of the top of the screen, which is very annoying. I didn’t realise the tape was double sided! 🤦🏼‍♂️ So that may explain the vibration I’m experiencing.

To get mine higher I tried adding some felt pads (like you use on furniture) to raise the bracket up further but then it fouls the screen in the lower position which is where I always use it. I’ll try some double sided tape to see if that cures the vibration. But my current thinking is to take the damn thing off altogether and rely on the TFT built in app, which works very well in my experience.

I also have the Motomate GPS mount on my 1250RS but I don't have an obstruction to the TFT. I am 5'-10" with a 32" inseam. Perhaps how tall a person is makes a difference here.

You need to remove the two rear body parts on the sides to access to another two M8x25 bolts on top of the luggage rack. You use the same bolt locations to either install the grab rails or aftermarket blanks.

So how do I remove the two rear body parts? Would someone please share the BMW repair manual pages showing this procedure? I'm stuck trying to get it done without the written/picture guidance. Thanks in advance for the help.

After experienced same issue with Nav to much rotated and obstructing main display, I simply put a pair of black plastic washer under the top two screen mounting screws to slightly angel the screen more vertical.
Gave me more than enough clearance to rotate the nav to avoid blocking main display. I am 183 cm by the way.
