Last week I completed a few days in Luxembourg and Belgium. Two areas often ignored by motorcyclists but both can offer great riding making full use of the tyre side treads with spectacular views. Both countries are Hilly with roads varying from tight hairpin bends to fast sweepers.
Stayed at Hotel Pommerloch in the north of Luxembourg www.hotelpommerloch.lu. Very good reasonably priced biker friendly hotel for B and B but evening meals are on the high side. The Luxembourg ride was taken from https://www.ride.co.uk/routes-1 Log on and go to ‘The Ride Guide to Europe Second edition-Routes in Luxembourg’ and down load free of charge Day 2 GPX file. This is a 5.5 hours 170 mile run that starts and ends in Luxembourg City and it gives you time for a brief look around the City. The city centre occupies a picturesque site perched high on precipitous cliffs that drop into a 70m gorge cut by the Alzette and Petrusse rivers, whose confluence is in the City.
The second day ride went north into Belgium and it can be downloaded from the same place under the heading Routes in Belgium-day 2. This is a 230mile 6.5 hour run that starts and ends in Spa. Visit the circuit and enjoy a food stop in the town itself.
For both rides you will need to alter the routes from/to your hotel, which in my case meant the Spa day was nearer to 8 hours. If you need them routes are also given to and from Calais.
The final stop was Ypres so I could attend the Service at the Menin gate. It is a simple but very emotional ceremony. If you do visit Ypres find an hour or two to visit the ‘In Flanders Field Museum’, which tells the story of WW1. It is easy to see why none of our grandfathers who were there would ever talk about it.
