Not really. The odds of being a victim are very low according to my insurance premium. I understand it is not the same for everyone. |

Sweden have direct ferries to Lithuania+ the other baltic counties, and we have alot of problem with home theft. gangs from former east european countries make burglary tours, outboard motors get stolen by the truck load and shipped east. We had visitors last year, stole some jewelery and our finest booze.... :( |

I have been riding BMW motorcycles for 40 years and have yet to hear a first-hand account of any one being stolen. No doubt it happens, but what do you do with a stolen BMW, assuming you can get the thing started without the chipped key? Part it out? What self-respecting BMW owner would buy a used part from the chop shop down the street to put on his immaculate BMW? So I don't think stealing BMW motorcycles are a big thing, at least not in the U.S.

I can only speculate about where they go, but the GS is popular worldwide, in places where there is no official dealer network and people don't tend to ask questions abut the source of spares. KTMs and any other off road bike are also highly prized with thieves as well as the usual sports bikes. From time to time in the UK we see news reports of shipping containers intercepted by customs at ports like Felixstowe. There was one operation where luxury cars were being exported to the Far East where the vehicles were broken up and the parts were packaged in counterfeit boxes for sale as new spare parts. Some parts were even imported into Australia which is where the scam was detected and traced back. That was some years ago and the internet just makes distribution so much easier. Sadly, in the UK there is a strong black market in spares for race bikes, track & off road. Scrutineers are supposed to check for engines and frames with serial numbers ground out but anecdotal evidence suggests that this is still a big problem in the lower classes where production bikes are only allowed to have minor modifications. "Steelie" CBR600s and early R6 are popular race and track bikes so are prime targets for thieves for the domestic market. Bike theft is not undertaken exclusively by East European gangs, it's been endemic in the UK for generations. |
