Rode down from North Hampshire to Plymouth on Friday evening to spend the weekend with my brother and to see (one of our favorite bands) Dreadzone.

It was a very wet ride down (mainly the A303). On arriving at his place I notice water beading on my right boot and rainbow oiled foot prints on the wet pavement. Checkout the bike and there was evidence of a thin film of oil on the right-hand light grey cylinder cover. The bike had been serviced around 100 miles before my 180mile ride to Plymouth, when the valve check was done, so I wondered if it was some residual oil left over from that – didn’t worry about it that evening as there was still plenty of oil in the sight glass.

Following morning took a proper look and by then a drip of oil had formed on the underside of the cylinder head cover, there was also an oil film on the foot peg, brake lever and exhaust silencer. The oil level, which had be dead on the top of the red circle was now 4mm (1/8”) below it.

Rode over to Ocean BMW, less than 3 miles from my brother’s, explained the situation to them. They took the bike in there and then, put it on a ramp, took the right side cover off and found the smaller inner seal of the two, the one that surrounds the spark plug tunnel, hadn’t been seated correctly. They corrected it and topped off the oil. So within 90minutes I was back at my brother’s. Ocean contacted the dealer I had the service done at (Vines, Guildford) and dealt with the coinage.

Rode home yesterday and no oil leak, just an utterly filthy bike from road crud.

ps - thoroughly enjoyed Dreadzone and the wharf in Tavistock is a great small music venue.
