Just got done with a mishap on the RS. I had a rear hugger that looked nice, but when the incident happened, the force of the tire hitting the frame of the hugger broke a mounting point for the rear caliper. BMW doesn’t make many spare parts. So, the whole rear drive must be replaced.

Being a bit ignorant of such matters, does a Mudsling do the same job as a hugger?

More so, one of the mounting bolts worked with the upper support arm of the rear drive/swingarm. It had a bushing, but when tightened down, it inhibited movement. Hence, it was returned. I then went with a Powerbronze I bought from a seller on eBay. It fit better, but it wasn’t as sexy. I would never have expected it to compromise parts in an accident. Zitat von Grumpy Goat im Beitrag #9 No, but it was the rear bolt point. The tech illustrated by turning the rear wheel, and the caliper pivoted on the front mount bolt. It was enough torque to crack the metal of the driveshaft.

When the carcass was pushed off the rear rim, it hit the armature holding the hugger, which transferred force into the mounting bolts. The brake caliper mounts are not designed to handle something like that. Without the hugger, the mount point only had to deal with the brake caliper. Most other huggers I’ve seen (on traditional swingarms) mount to the swingarm. BMW’s single sided swingarm takes that option away. So, of the two huggers I’ve seen, both have mounting issues.

You've missed my point COMPLETELY - if you have an "incident" that breaks both your wheels and pushes the tire carcass off the broken wheels it is disingenuous to blame subsequent damage on any hugger. That's like blaming a helmet for a broken windshield in a "exited the seat at speed incident". |

The Puig caused binding on a bolt that’s supposed to allow movement...hence why I didn’t keep it. I know some retrofitted it with a better bushing to correct that, but it’s a design oversight. The Powerbronze hugger (what I had), utilized mount points not designed to be used to mount a hugger. I’m surprised the tire even hit the hugger, and the whole driveshaft is being replaced because of the broken mount point. I have to question what types of rear tire failures would create collateral damage because of the design of a given hugger.
