New DC member with a tie-down strap question

After 40+ years with my R75/6 I finally gave in and sold it so someone else can have the joy(?) of maintenance on a vintage bike. I am searching the internet for a low mileage RS to replace it and I am currently negotiating with a dealer in Florida. I live in Northern Virginia so it will be a long ride home on a bike I will be just getting to know and very different from what I had. I'm thinking of riding it over to the Auto Train in Sanford, FL and letting Amtrak do the long haul north. Youtube videos show a lot of bikes being shipped this way. These videos show the bikes being secured at or near the front forks. Does anyone have recommendations on the best tie-down points to use at the front end? |

Shapes, I've had no experience tying my RS down, but the other suggestions do seem reasonably secure. A lot will depend on the trains system for securing it. Best to check with them up here(in Alexandria I believe) to prepare for the return trip home. Sanford to NOVA is not a one day ride. Florence SC is most peoples mid way stop point. But anyway, welcome to the forum, you're gonna love the RS. I'm out in Haymarket and work in Chantilly mostly riding westerly sojourns for those leisurely/spirited Sunday outings. IMHO, the fairing severely limits the angle on the tie downs, but I've never had a problem trailering the bike. My dealer is 130-miles away and some services (valve checks) require a cold engine. So, I rent a Uhaul trailer for $15/day and trailer the bike in for those services.

I have not trailered my R1200 RS, but I trailered a K1200 RS and the BMW manual instruction is as posted above. Here is a picture of my tie downs, I would do the R RS the same way if needed.Trailering K RS.jpg - Bild entfernt (keine Rechte)

There are tie down straps that one can attach to the hand grips. They work well and being higher up with greater mechanical advantage, can secure the bike with less tension in the straps.

That would be the Canyon Dancer Bar Harness (www.canyondancer.com) Have used it quite a bit when transporting the Duc to track days. Has a soft fleece covering over the center section to prevent any scuffing. They have other options, as well, on their site.
