General topics » Is engine casing corrosion a problem on this bike?

Did a test ride on an RS the weekend gone and loved the bike. My only concern is that given it shares the same engine as the GS and RT which have had well-documented issues with engine casing corrosion. They have used different paint on the new models (black paint) which should stop the problem, according to the BMW salesman.

I use my bike every day so it will be run through winter and exposed to the salt they lay on the roads in the UK.

Has the above been an issue with the RS? What are your experiences?

I have had several Boxers. The engine corrosion seemed to be a problem on the air-cooled R models because the water pump was behind the cover and water collected there. Not heard of any corrosion cases with liquid cooled R models

I think caking it in anti-corrosive from the off (& regular applications) wouldn't do any harm

Engine and chassis castings have remained pristine on my '16. I store it in a climate controlled shop and keep it clean, but it seems to be a durable finish. No complaints...

This video was posted on Facebook a few weeks ago. From the comments you get a general consensus that this is unusual but not an isolated incident.

It is a shame that we should even after consider it when buying a premium product. Never been an issue with my other bikes.
Loved the bike though so going to take the plunge but buying new so any issues will be covered. Just need to decide on a heavily discounted 2018 or the 2019. What month are the 2019 bikes likely to hit the showrooms?

Reckon the 2019 bikes maybe around October/November time maybe and by the sound of things will have the new 1250 engine, so as well as the discount you may wish to consider whether you want to be one of the early guinea pigs for the new engine!

Just came of the phone to a local dealer who did make it clear that what he is going to say in not gospel but the rs will probably have the new engine and any orders placed end of the year will be in jan/feb 2019. I agree with the new engine could be a risk. I will probably go for a discounted 2018 end of this month and think of changing this time 2019 if the bike/engine is a noticeable improvement on the 2018. The reality is I can not max out the current engine but if the tft screen comes in and a few incremental improvements else where I will probably for it.
