I would like to apologize for causing the "Servicing" thread to be closed. Sometimes my mind drifts and I forget the original subject matter. In the future I would appreciate it that when I get off topic too far that someone mention my malfeasance and I will immediately bring myself back under control. I think that is better than locking a thread that someone might want to use to continue the original discussion. My bad. If the moderators want to delete some of my posts as not being appropriate, go right ahead.

I might add that some forums that I visit do allow a lot of thread topic drift, such as going from welcoming a new member, to discussing birds and bats and whether Australians are upside down. Sometimes I just forget where I am, especially during the early morning before I have had a cup of coffee.

Just to illustrate how other forums are different: I also visit an electric motorcycle forum and I once tried to start a joke thread in the general discussion section. That went over like a lead balloon. Apparently no one there likes jokes and only wants to talk about the technical aspects of electric propulsion. A serious group over there.

If I recall correctly, you had some help in that "Drift".

I sent a note to Wessie for my part in the issue. I didn't pay attention to the forum sub-topic area and followed the flow of the discussion. Yep, that can lead to problems.

I think it would have been handled better if a moderator had posted a gentle reminder to stay on track of the original post.
I was surprised to see the thread closed without warning.
This forum is still young and we're all trying to figure out what's allowed.

I am a fan of Richard's posts and yes, while his posts may drift off sometimes, who else is not guilty of the same. Moderating a forum is work and Wessie does a fine job of it as he seems to read all of the posts. I don't since it don't have the time for it and rely on suggestions from members most of the time.

Some forum software allow the mods to move certain posts to another thread, but am not sure this one has that capability. In cases of subject drift, and with that capability, branching a set of posts off into a new thread with an explanatory note from the Mod or Admin is probably the best / most effective way to cause a course correction without dampening the spirit of the discussion.

It's weird how much the rules and culture of different forums varies, even when the forum topic is basically the same. For example, I subscribe to three bike forums and they are all completely different in that respect; one of them is more or less complete anarchy and a large proportion of its content would instantly be banned elsewhere (so apologies for thread drift don't exactly happen a lot there!) . In the other forum, the owner/moderator is a Brit with an aversion to American English, and has installed software to prevent it - so if you try to type "guy" it autocorrects to "bloke"; "cool" becomes "cold"; "ass" becomes "donkey"; "Hi" becomes "Hello". (So, leads to lots of interesting discussion about the UK motorcycle racer/TV presenter "Bloke Martin", "hello vis" vests, and "aching donkeys" after a long ride...)

If I'm looking for information Google always finds it, I go to forums strictly for entertainment. It's one thing to moderate civility another to moderate topic; in face to face conversations the topic ALWAYS drifts. Once the personalities are moderated out, motorcycle forums become downright boring.

I did think about splitting the thread. The query relating to how tax is charged on labour was okay as these cultural differences sometimes need explanation.

I am also a member of a forum that has a very loose moderation and most of it is dross but some posts are quite entertaining, others are informative. This forum has tens of thousands of members and it is easy to block certain posters without missing out on stuff that you find interesting. The forum has been going since 2001 having morphed from a Yahoo group. What was a single marque forum now covers all makes as people acquire other bikes or have a change.

This is a forum with a very small membership and I would like to see it grow. A thread on servicing might be the first thread a newbie looks at as this might influence a bike purchase. I would hate for them to be put off owning an RS or joining the forum by seeing a thread that becomes a 30 page rant about the pros and cons of fiscal policy across the planet.

It would be a simple job to re-open the servicing thread and take out the last half dozen or so posts. Maybe better to start a new thread as servicing prices and dealer performance are dynamic.

As far as I am concerned Wessie, do whatever you think is best. I have my tax ranting out of my system - for now.

This is a really good forum, with some really good guys. One of the best posts I've seen on here is some fantastic help that Lee provided. Just look at this thread, he gets exactly what the OP wanted. If there is a bit of drift, who cares if you get good stuff like this on a regular basis?
