Since then we are major importers of petrol & diesel, with a large proportion coming from Russia. The English Channel is awash with huge tankers waiting for movements in the currency exchange rate or the oil price waiting to offload their cargo of unknown origin for the most profit. You can purchase from any retailer you like but you will never know the origin of what comes out of the pipe as it all gets mixed together in one of 17 distribution centres. The fuel is only branded at the point it enters the delivery tanker where the additive package is mixed in. Of course, those additives might make a difference... |

Ged

Do you think that is too volatile? It's a very dangerous cargo but there are nearly 200 ships plying the seas carrying liquid gas at high pressure. They have built a pipeline across Mid Wales to connect into the National Grid due to the volume we import from Russia etc. as there isn't enough coming in from the North Sea as you say. Petroleum is shipped all around the world. We do not have enough refining capacity in the UK to meet demand so we are now a net importer of petrol. I know most of this due to a close friend working for Shell but a simple google will verify what I have said above. |

My father was a refinery manager for Shell. There are differences in fuel blends from the various refiners. However, it is difficult to know which blend is used at independent fuel stations. It is confusing as gasoline producers use different names for their additives, but mainly things like detergents and reformers are used in non-oxygenated fuel or MTBE or Ethanol in oxygenated fuel to achieve a target octane. Even the “cracking process” used to refine the gasoline can affect octane, so differences occur between thermal, catalyst, and hydro-cracking. In the US, only octane and flow rate are regulated by the government. I buy fuel from stations affiliated with a major producer at high volume outlets so I’ll know what sort of additives are used and that the fuel is fresh.
