can someone give me a heads up on service intervals?
I have the service spanner showing, Ive got 12000 miles on the trip.

its been over 12 months since I last put my money in a BMW mechanics hands.

Does this mean I need a 12000 mile service or does it mean the mechanic wants more money for doing little.

Manual says 6000 miles between services. A minor service is done at each 6000 and a major service is done at each 12,000 miles. A service is required each 12 months regardless of mileage.
The service reminder is reset at a service- 12 month and 6000 mile intervals.

Rodger, I just had my 12K miles service done. The big expense is the valve check and correction if necessary. I was quoted US $104.00 if this was necessary. My bike was still within tolerances, so the oil change, air filter change etc cost about US$ 700.

Note that you can self-service and ignore the service reminder if you wish.

I'm not certain that my service interval was ever initiated before my purchase from the dealer. It's not 1 year old to me until September 1, and my current mileage is around 3200 miles, but when cycling through the info selections, my next service mileage is set to 0 and the date is 01/01/09.

I did the break in service and intend to do the next service at 6000 miles myself. I'll have to repost here if I get some sort of notification. I dislike manufacturers telling me what to do and when, as if I'm not intelligent enough to keep track of these things myself. Stick.

At least the service interval setting has helped Hex Code, and they seem to be a good, switched on and genuine business.
My GS 911 is due to be delivered this week

I have been inspired to get the filter and oil in preparation for an oil change next month.

I have some good news to long time BMW owners. The Mahle oil filter spanner which was correct for the R1100 S (and therefore all "Oil Heads") also fits the RS filter. There may be an issue with the original running in filter, but not with the replacement.

It also looks like the older filter is a match apart from it being about 20 mm deeper so it would stick out from the side of the motor. I will give the old (new stock) filter to anyone who wants it in the local BMW club rather than take any risk - but there may not be any risk, only an issue with appearance (and a slightly increased oil volume).

BTW, I see from the BMW manual that you also need a special tool to lock the crank in place at TDC that is inserted through a threaded plug with an 8 mm hex that you find on the left side of the motor. I bought a spare plug and drilled it, and tapped it with an 8 x 1.25 tap to fit a similar tool I have for the Can Am Spyder. I will find out in a couple of weeks if it works or not, but if there is any issue it will only be in the diameter of the "tip". Once the plug is drilled and threaded, any 8 mm bolt will probably work, with the tip adjusted with a bench grinder. (no, I don't have a lathe.... but.. it would be a hell of a lot more expensive than just buying the part!)

The service seems to be 6000 miles plus first service, so second service is 6600 and 12600 and so on.

I reset my service interval after the oil change and service using the GS 911.
I had no problem re-setting via my desktop computer / wifi but I got an error message when I first tried to re-set using my Samsung Galaxy Note 8. The Note gave me an error message that the K54 (that is our RS model) was not the correct software for the GS 911 to work.

Anyone else with any issues in using the GS 911 via their smartphone?

Is the GS911 gizmo worth having, for reasons other than just resetting the service interval?
(I don't do my own servicing, but have it done by a non-franchised mechanic who isn't able to do the reset)

I have the USB version for my F800St and was told it won't work with the LC Boxer engine, only the WiFi would work with the LC engines.

Does anyone know different as it would save me a lot of money?
