Off Topic » Help with dog ear wax….

The small dog, a rescued Chihuahua, has an issue with ear wax. It started with an infection. Vet gave me an antiseptic wash to treat it. The swelling and smell went away, but she still produces dark brown globs of stuff that I physically clean out every other day then use wet swabs of ionized water (Banixx).

I’m not going back to the vet until the annual physical. My issue researching is that dark brown is associated with infection, but so is smell. This has no smell, and I found a site saying the wax can turn dark brown from capturing dirt and oxidation. If it doesn’t go away by the annual check, I’ll have the vet test a sample. Maybe she just produces copious amounts of ear wax?

Vet had us remove any and all poultry from her diet as he suspects a food allergy. Can’t say it has helped, but we made the change when we started cleaning out the ears with antiseptic.

I could use insight from those who have traveled this road. I can’t find helpful information as most every site says the same thing. Dark brown wax with no smell doesn’t seem to deserve its own attention. Heck, I have to dig these globs out, so I don’t even know if they are excessive or wouldn’t be noticeable except for the light color of the dog’s fur.
