Electronics » Adding extra LED brake lights - have to use EZCan??

Hey guys
I finally got around to fitting a signal dynamics dual LED license plate frame to my 2018. I’ve fitted them previously on both S1000R and K1300S with no issues. They are great. And essential (in my mind) for commuting on LA freeways!

I wired it in with PosiTaps under the seat - in the exposed length of wire coming from the brake light connector plug. All ok.

But NOT. When I first turn on the bike the tail light comes on fine (OEM and plate frame LEDs) but when I touch the brake the brake lights flash on briefly then go off and after that NEITHER brake light works at all. Dammit.
I’m guessing the CANBUS system is now more advanced and sensitive and is causing the problem?

I want a cheap fix to this - I’d rather not spend $200 on a Hex CANBUS adapter thingy - is their anyway to resolve with out that response? I will not be adding any other accessories.

I have Skene Lights, so they came with a control module. Power comes from battery. Single wire to brake light to use as a signal only. No issues. I have a CANSmart, but I installed it after, so I don’t use it for the extra brake lights. I’d think aftermarket lights would come with a 3-wire setup…positive, negative and signal. A chip can regulate the light and need no space. You must be using a very basic setup.

Skene lights sells the control module by itself. I would presume it would manage any 12v auxiliary stop light.

That does sound like a CANBUS issue to me.

I installed Cyclops LED inserts in the rear signals, which double as extra brake lights. I used an EZCAN because the wiring was easier, but also because the EZCAN adds the brake flashing function, which I think is worth it.

I just installed a Denali B6 extra tailight and yes, yours should work fine without the CANBus adapter.

There should be 3 wires from your new light;

12v-

12v+ Switched

12v+Brake input

I wired the 12v+ to the accessory socket as I already have a connector there which I also use to power my aux driving lights, the 12v- and 12v+ Brake input I tapped near the stock plug.

So glad I got it installed, I always felt the stock tailight was on the small side

I actually just ordered the Skene IQ 260 controller ($70 delivered) as it seemed to be a relatively easy update on what I tried already and also gives the brake ‘flicker’ option which is always a positive in my view.

I’ll keep you posted when I get it sorted - hopefully in about a week!

Sooooo I finally had time to install the Skene controller. Very easy really - just a few more positap thingies and done. Works perfectly. Very happy. I don’t really like the messy look of the wiring under the seat - but it does not seem fragile and I don’t keep anything in that space to clatter about and cause damage. My commute in LA traffic now feels a little bit safer..

You can install it under the fender…there’s enough space…you just run the relevant wires through a hole already under the seat.
