When you buy out of state you will get a temporary registration, and a temp tag. Then you must go to the Va DMV to register & tag the vehicle where they will collect the sales tax based on the purchase amount prior to trade in. There's no way around them getting as much as they can. We also have a county sticker (the sticker is just a fee) and personal property tax, prorated for the period of ownership and paid in October.
