Electronics » Denali CANsmart Controller and 2.0 D2 installed

I've been waiting since last autumn for ezCAN to get a type approval in Europe, and finally decided that maybe this will not happen during this riding season, so I went for the Denali version of it. Together with it, I got their D2 TriOptic set and a pair of MachineArt mark 2 Light Bars.

I spent probably almost more than 4 hours on removing panels and figuring how to route the cables (thank you Grumpy Goat for your videos), although I used a slightly different route. I just hope that the cables will not melt over the boxer engine during the summer heat of Spain and Portugal. I still need to aim them correctly and secure this position, as I fill they are prone to vibrations. I removed the original lenses on the D2s and used the included Flood Lenses instead. I had to remove the BMW alarm to access the RDC unit, which for some reason, was not triggered.

They mount on to the frame. I don't know much, if anything, about frame design, but I don't think the frame is not symmetrical. There was a post some time ago, that the cylinder crash bars are not level because the cylinder heads are not level in the boxer engine.

I bought the MachineArt bars and indeed they were not symmetrical. One light was 20mm lower than the other and I had to return them to Nippy Norman who thankfully refunded them. I replaced them with the standard BMW bar which was perfectly level.
I don't understand why the MachineArt bars seem to work on some bikes but not others, but I can verify that the BMW ones are excellent, if a bit more expensive.

You just made an old man cry. I looked at the photos, I got the measuring tape, and you are right, their distance from the ground does not seem to be same, there is a difference of maybe 10mm. I think it has to do with the mounting spots on the frame, which does not seem to be in level.

Does this mean there is a design fault on the Machine Art mount? I really don't think they're meant to be 'lopsided'?

I have the Machine Art Event Guard which is excellent (though hideously expensive) at keeping the crap off the front of the block, and so would naturally go for their mounting bar.

I'm sure I read the BMW OE bar wont fit with the Avant Guard - but could be wrong.

I believe that the post I'm referring to is yours, either here or the old forum. Unless we find a drowning of the engine, I would be difficult to say whether the lights are on the same plane or not.

Are the cylinders in the same horizontal plane? The exhaust exits, amongst others, are not. The left cylinder seems to sit a little lower than the other one.

if the left sits lower than the right, it shows that the RS is a boy bike.

Otherwise, wouldn't it be a V twin and not a flat twin???

What you say, that the cylinders have to be in a dead straight line, makes sense. This is what I recall from the engineering classes back in college.

But the difference in height, between the left and the right side of the engine, is measurable. I went back and found another illustration, and opened it to my beloved Photoshop.



Unless this is so badly made, it looks like the cylinders axis, is not parallel to the horizontal plane, but rather inclined. For a moment I thought that the whole view had to be rotated. But the vertical lines are, well, vertical. The oil level is horizontal, but the cylinder blocks, and whatever they include, is at an angle.

I had a look on the Wikipedia article on flat engine, and I quote 'the "opposite" cylinders being slightly out of line with each other.'

I really don't know on which plane or if in more than one is this article is referring too.
