Can anyone tell me what the the valve clearances should be on a 2017 RS as I would like to check them to see if it has anything to do with a loud tapping noise on my RH cylinder.

No idea for these new fangled 2017 bikes, but my Haynes manual for the old bangers says

0.10 to 0.17 mm IN

and

0.34 to 0.41 mm OUT

Must check mine sometime.

ps - have you seen the ootoob clip showing how to change the shims

pps - I read that it’s better to hear a healthy rattle than be deathly silent (I guess that’s why I broke a rocker on my 75/5 way back in 1986 and rode home on a noisy single cylinder 375cc bike)

I just checked the BMW DVD service manual and got the same results. Check with a cold engine.

Thanks for the info and yes I work on the same principle that it's better to hear a rattle than not.

I'd like to know how many people have actually had valve clearance checked and an adjustment performed by a mechanic with regards to the shims at the 12k/24k/36k service intervals. Stick.

My clearance was checked at the 12k service. But no adjustments were needed. And my '16 has (very brief) clatter from the right side on most start ups

I've since discovered from other BMW forums that the loud tapping I'm hearing from the RH cylinder is the de-compressor mechanism and there is a replacement camshaft. I will be doing around 3k miles on tour shortly by which time I will need my 12k service, I will then bring up the noise issue again but I won't hold my breath for them doing anything about it.

Valves were in spec but the cam timing was off.

Cam timing off? Well, that certainly seems like a warranty issue, whether is was done at the factory or caused by a franchised dealer during a previous valve adjustment .

It was a very small adjustment to bring it back into specification and it is considered a maintenance item.

My bikes haven't seen a dealer for service - ever.

I have been gifted an older drill press from an engineering shop. I have coupled that with a 2 axis vice and as a result, not only can I drill holes that are square and true, but I have very accurate positioning!! What have I raised that here? Because with this tool, I know I can actually make up the cam holding tool that BMW uses to check valve timing.
What I need is someone who can give me the dimensions.
Is there anyone out there than can provide these measurements????
My guess is that the tool can be made out of hardwood, or maybe a stiff nylon with the drill press, a saw and file / sander.
