I got invited on a short break up to Scotland with a bunch I'd never ridden with before (except one guy, I rode with him up to Nordkapp; this was a bunch of his work colleagues).

I think 2 of them had recently done a "Bike Safe" course, and another recently done his IAM training.

Suffice to say, speed limits were only ever lightly touched, rather than being bent or even broken. It became rather frustrating on some roads.

On the plus side, I got to see all the lovely scenery, and I don't think my bike has ever been so fuel efficient

A nice bunch guys, but not sure I'll be riding with them again. Too... "adrenalin-free" for my liking.

If you have a good group of riding buddies then your approach sounds ideal to me Wessie, I usually ride alone (or with my wife pillion) and don’t especially like riding in a group, it’s all too easy to follow someone else’s rear wheel rather than using your own judgement and road craft. But meeting for social time in the evening is a good thing to look forward to and have that chance to discuss the day.

Plus 1 other is usually enough for me. You both know the other’s style and understand the “ground rules”.

In the few group rides I’ve done, other folk end up going too fast or too slow. As for catching up and dealing with other traffic. Grrrrrrr.

Following or being followed is high risk compared with riding solo.
