RE: GPS Re-location - 5

Hi Ray, just to repeat what I said about the small fouling issue I had with the Horning mount (same issue with fluid reservoirs and GPS mount), I loosened the clamp for the reservoirs and levers on each side and rotated them by perhaps 5-10 degrees, that was sufficient to give me full clearance with standard screen and no bar risers. That small rotation does not affect the look or feel of the brake and clutch levers, so it will hopefully work for you too.

Ray, I failed to make my second try tight enough with even the most minimum of filing, so, I looked for the root of the problem. The cast arms held in place by the e-clips must require a precise tube length cut. Jonas used 125mm in his initial dialogue, as did I, and while I'm using a tubing cutter, it's perhaps hit or miss on getting the right length for different bikes.

So, I migrated to tensioning. 2 black zip ties connected together and tightened to just the right clicks around the "arms" and problem solved. At first I thought this looked jury rigged, but then I thought, it's not that obtrusive to make this great idea a working solution. In the position I placed the zip's you cannot lower the windshield but for me that's not a problem because I never lower mine. With the ties mounted higher one might be able to set the windshield to a lower position. It's still easy to reach the release arms to remove the Nav from the cradle as well.

Also I decided to clean up the handle bar mount bolts as others mentioned with M8-1.25x30 stainless steel hex head's. At $1.94 each they won't have too big a hit on the 401(k)! . Stick.

Thanks Stick, that's a great solution and keeps faith with the simplicity of the original idea. I was all set to try and fabricate something similar to the anti rotation device on the MV GPS holder. I'll try your solution first.

Hi Ray, now I’m worried that I gave you wrong info, I took it from a reference to my original order via ebay. As I’m away on leave I don’t have another way to verify this for now.

Way back on post 30, Boxerboy recommended a wiring hide that worked well. Also in the photos below are the replacement Torx bolts holding down the bars. Thanks, B.B...

This is my solution to the origional GPS mount on the top yolks... which after using for a few days I found both inconvenient..and a little dangerous as I was looking down...instead of ahead few a few seconds... and it only takes a few seconds...for someone to pull out/walk out/run out while i'm looking down...for me to have an accident.

I did post this on the old (lost in space) site!

I used a solution posted by another member to relocate my GPS mount under the screen above the dash.. (sorry I cannot remember your name for the credits other than your handle was Mr.Brooks??)

First I prised the upper pivot point locking washers for the screen off its seat and meaured the pins that protrude through the casting..
I then took a 1/2 inch square aluminium bar and cut it to length to fit between the pins... i also bored a hole in both ends slightly larger than the pin
I had measured and used a thin plastic pipe as a bearing between the hole and the pin...giving a snug fit..but allowing a small amount of movement for the screen to still operate in its two positions.

Once i had shaped the ends of the bar to stop them fouling the screen support frame... i slotted the square bar in place and began measuring the best position for my bracket.

At this point I dismantled the locking mechanism from the mount, as it was bulky and causing steering fouling issues.

with the bare GPS mounting clamp I was better able to fit the GPS screen in the position I wanted... as low as possible without obscuring any of the speedo.
I used Aluminium angle for the upright bracket and shaped and cut it to be as small as possible. a trial fit was done by duck taping it in position.. and the GPS lead was relocated to behind the instrument cluster.

Very happy with the positions... i added another flat piece of aluminium under the square bar to prevent the mount from rotating...

this will later be secured using double sided tape...
I added a slight twist to this flat bar to enable the GPS to sit at the angle i needed for comfortable viewing..
once I was happy with the bracket... I drilled and tapped the holes in the square bar to enable the pieces to be fitted neatly together.


at this point i also made a small chair for my GoPro to sit in.. of angle aluminium... and drilled and tapped the holes... for fitting...

everything was test fitted on the bike before final dismantling and painting in two coats of black paint (Hammerite spray)
once dry... it was all assembled... and fitted.... I am very happy with the GPS position now... it is easy to glance at it without loosing you peripheral vision of the road... unlike the other position on the yolk which had the upper part of my crash helmet obscuring the road as i glanced down....

No clearance issues on the new positioning of the GPS, either with handlebar parts or speedo... and to switch the GoPro on and off is down by raising the windscreen to its higher position for a second or so...and the on button can be reached.
below is the process in Photos..




I have since added a safety tether to the satnav just in case it becomes dislodged accidentally... the end result... is no vibration ... clear and easy viewing... safe... and cost me £10 in materials and a weekend of my time.

Very happy now!!

One of the items I didn't like about the bike was the positioning of the BMW Navigator. As I see it, you have the look down just a bit too much, taking your eyes off the road. My previous bike, a 2016 GS had the GPS mounted above the clockwork and that I really liked.

I've now seen 4 different solutions from different manufacturers.

This is was a wise recommendation on the old forum which I copied and works very well. And the screen is able to be moved to low or high while on the move.
The aluminium cost less than R100.00

No obstruction and no vibration.

Does anyone have the instructions for fitting the supplementary spring? Can't seem to find any print-out and of course all the information was on the old site :-(
